By the way, Happy New Year!Larazarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15027006344943309476noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7116409198962270422.post-87430790662236391462012-05-07T10:33:00.002-05:002012-05-07T10:33:54.691-05:00Sheep to Shawl, April 2012To see pictures from Sheep to Shawl event by West Alabama Fiber Guild that took place on April 14, 2012, in the Kentuck courtyard, Northport, AL, please visit http://wafguild.blogspot.com/2012/05/sheep-to-shawl-2012.html.
It was a very sunny day. The courtyard was buzzing with fiber activities: shearing the sheep, carding, spinning, and weaving. We had many interested visitors. Our teamwork resulted in a beautiful shawl. Thank you, everybody, for your participation!
It was much more enjoyable this year, since the a la cARTe event with West Alabama Fiber Guild was scheduled for spring and not for summer, as it was last year, and took place inside the annex where our exhibit was still running. We were demonstrating spinning on spinning wheels and drop spindles and teaching a couple of enthusiastic visitors to spin.
In March Tuscaloosa city celebrates the Sakura Festival and Japanese culture, since it has a sister city in Japan. That's why the Japanese theme was chosen for the a la cARTe. Especially for the event I designed the sakura display, and several of our members contributed their handcrafted cherry blossoms making our fiber tree bloom. Temari balls were also adorning trees, both live and iron kinds, in the courtyard.
And then of course I want to celebrate the fresh feeling of the coming spring by expressing it in a new design. Last year it was the Green Spring Bag, and this year it's the Leaf Pendant, my last creation. I came up with it quite unexpectedly. It was supposed to be a practice piece in incorporating leaves into a bead crocheted strip. While working on it, I thought the technique could be used for making leaf pendants, and then I realized that I already had one.

All I needed to do is to add straps, thin straps that would not overpower the focal piece. Tatted chains with smaller beads seemed like a good idea. Though I spent several hours trying to figure out how to invisibly conceal nylon threads inside the thin tatted straps in order to finish the ends, I now have another basic strap design in my collection. It's really handy to know different kinds of cords and straps, as you have more styles and techniques to choose from in a specific situation. For example, different techniques, e.g. crochet, tatting, kumihimo, etc., require different number of threads and ways of manipulation, and depending on how many ends you already have in a yet unfinished piece or how many you would need to conceal you may prefer one or another purely from technical considerations. Or you may want to choose one method or another because of a particular look and feel.Larazarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15027006344943309476noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7116409198962270422.post-37295732874466081382011-02-25T20:58:00.010-06:002011-02-26T10:23:20.501-06:00Butterfly Pin in Irish and Bead CrochetTechniques: Irish Crochet, Bead Crochet

An example of Bead Crochet

In Bead Crochet beads are strung in a particular order onto the working thread and are incorporated into crochet stitches as you work. Bead crochet has been particularly popular for making purses and bags. Earlier pieces from the nineteenth century were worked with fine silk thread and tiny beads made of glass, gold, silver, steel, or iron. Traditionally it was done in single crochet stitch worked in rounds or rows. If it was worked in rows the thread had to be broken at the end of each row. That's because beads would show only on every other row and would not form a continuous surface, if you turn your work at the end of each row. Beads were incorporated into every stitch forming a colorful pattern. Nowadays fiber artists invent new bead crochet stitches and experiment with different kinds of threads and beads of different sizes. This opens up new possibilities for creating various designs from bags to jewelry.

An example of Irish Crochet Lace

As its name implies, Irish crochet lace developed in Ireland. It was begun as a cottage industry to provide an additional means of livelihood for Irish people during the famine years of the 1840s. The lace consists of separate motifs and spaces between them filled in with various forms of net. Irish crochet offers a rich variety of forms. Heavy, often textural and three-dimensional, motifs sharply contrast with the spider-web-thin background. To obtain heavy effect, much of Irish crochet is done over a padding cord. Thanks to its rich and decorative appearance, the lace was so attractive that from about 1850 the lace was sought by the fashion conscious in Paris, Vienna, Brussels, London, and New York. It was also a time when machine made lace was becoming readily available, which largely contributed to decline in the development of the craft. By the late 19th century however, there was a change in fashion, the lace was again in favour, and French couture houses placed orders for Irish crochet worked in antique designs. Changing fashions in the 1920s caused a decline in interest; fashion became less feminine, and there was also stiff competition from machine made lace.
Some people recommend to start with undyed wool that is carded, not combed. The terms "carded" and "combed" are used to describe the two major types of fiber preparation. If carded fiber is unavailable, then choose commercial combed top, preferably undyed. Dyeing can compact fibers, which can make drafting more difficult. The following sheep breeds may be an excellent wool choice for a beginner: Coopworth, Romney, Corriedale, and Bluefaced Leicester.

All these are good suggestions, it doesn't mean, however, you can't do otherwise. You should like your fiber choice, that's important. My first wool was dyed combed top, breed was not specified. It was a well-prepared fiber, easy and fun to spin. If you choose dyed fiber, it may be a good idea to avoid variegated colors at first and stick to solid and semi-solid colors (one color with shades ranging throughout the fiber). Variegated colors may require a special approach and be distracting in the beginning, so you may want to save playing with colors for later, when you are more adept at spinning technique.

Wool is the best fiber choice for beginners, since it is easier to control and spin, it's not slippery and has a long staple. Start with at least 4oz of fiber. Etsy is an excellent source for buying wool. Type in "spinning wool" in the search box and you'll get plenty to choose from.

When it comes to choosing a spindle, different people prefer different types of spindles to learn and teach. I started with a top-whorl spindle. In contrary to a low-whorl spindle, it allows you to easily stop and hold your spindle with your knees when you learn to spin and employ the park and draft method. It also allows you to roll the spindle shaft on your thigh to set the spindle in motion, which is a more powerful and faster way to add twist to your fiber, than if you flick the shaft with your fingers. It'll all become more apparent as you go along.

Spin singles first, then ply two singles, that is spin two spun threads together only in the opposite direction, to get a two-ply yarn, which after washing can be used in a knitted or crocheted project.

It was that time of the year again with bells, carols, Christmas lights, and hot chocolate. The West Alabama Fiber Guild once again took part in the festive celebrations at Dickens Downtown in historic downtown Northport, December 7th, from 5 to 8 pm. We demonstrated fiber arts in the Kentuck Courtyard.

It was exciting for me, since this time I took part in the celebrations not as a visitor, but as a participant.

It was quite cold, but not as bad as I feared. I managed to spin wool on my drop spindle with my bare hands almost the whole time, from 5 to 8pm. During the last hour however, the cold crept closer and eventually succeeded in getting to my hands and feet.

We had a lovely busy spot, under a lighted tree in the Kentuck courtyard. Right in the center of the courtyard, there was a blazing fire with pots firing underneath. People were gathering around it to get warm. Bagpipes were playing. Christmas lights were glittering. Artists were demonstrating. Our guild members were spinning, weaving, and braiding. Sasha, my son, was also there, running back and forth between the fire and our fiber group.

Larazarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15027006344943309476noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7116409198962270422.post-38078589220201065582010-12-25T21:37:00.003-06:002011-01-21T14:41:24.083-06:00Kentuck Festival of the Arts 2010
West Alabama Fiber Guild participated in Kentuck Festival of the Arts this year, October 16-17. Also last year, and I suppose the year before that. Somebody said it was rainy two years ago. I remember it was muddy a year ago, and I only experienced it from a visitor's point of view, which means a couple of hours instead of 2 days. This year it was extremely dusty. Because it was very dry. And this year I was there as a participant. Funny, how the weather works sometimes. But I am not going to talk about that; anyways, complaining about weather is a meaningless occupation. And apart from that it was fun. Even my son, one of our youngest members, enjoyed the festival for the two full days.

Our members offered their works for sale and demonstrated weaving, kumihimo braiding, spinning wool and linen, bobbin lace, knitting, preparing fiber for spinning, and more. Weaving and spinning activities for kids and adults were offered as well. I personally demonstrated thread crochet and spinning on a drop spindle.

A la cARTe series is organized by the Kentuck Museum Association. On the 3rd Saturday each month they engage the local community and feature artist demonstrations, kids' activities, and regional cuisine. In August the West Alabama Fiber Guild demonstrated fiber arts there, and I, as a Guild member, took part in the celebrations.

It was fun, apart from the baking heat in the middle of the day in Alabama summer. Sticky fingers didn't go well with tatting and thread crochet for some reason. The nice part, however, was a white tent overhead, sprinkling water in the middle of the Kentuck Courtyard, friendly visitors, organizers, and a company of my son Sasha and our fellow guild members. Sasha is also an enthusiastic 8 years old guild member, as well as a big help.
This nylon thread lends itself nicely to the delicate lace and, thanks also to the bonding in it, makes the lace crisp and durable. The blue pair was made with a polyester sewing thread. Absence of bonding in the thread produced a softer, less crisp lace. It was also harder to work with, since the bonding, among other advantages, gives thread a smooth protective coating. In spite of that I like this pair for its rich blue color, which makes a good match for a pair of casual blue jeans.

A palette of colors for beads, C-Lon micro cord and similar nylons provides almost endless possibilites for creating colorful jewelry that can be matched to any outfit and purpose. And this color aspect makes it even more exciting, since the color here is expressed not only in beads but also in the "framing filigree" of lace.

I used river shell beads in all of the designs, pearls (in the pink/champagne pair and the green pair in the center), and glass beads (also in the green pair). The long beads are encased between two tatted rings on both sides of a bead, holding it securely in place. That's my little trick.

Rediscovering old needlework techniques has always been inspiring.
Larazarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15027006344943309476noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7116409198962270422.post-58584436610811113752010-09-02T12:21:00.001-05:002010-09-02T12:23:28.641-05:00Crochet Thimble

Who needs a crochet thimble?

Thread crochet and bead crochet often require keeping a very consistent and tight tension. It may be hard on the finger over which the crochet thread that's being worked up in the crochet piece goes. For me it's my left index finger. It may go numb, cold, and may get an unpleasant sensation after some time spent crocheting, which comes from the thread being constantly pulled and rubbed over it, especially if it's a non-stretchy stiffer thread, like nylon. Sounds familiar? The solution I found is quite simple. I devised a thimble to protect my finger. Now I can work longer and with comfort. It may feel awkward at first, but after a while you'll get used to it and the thimble will shape and "get used" to your finger. I whipped up mine on the spot rather quickly, feeling frustrated with all the unpleasant sensations, thinking I wouldn't be able to continue working and designing if didn't find a solution. And I did.

You will need a small piece of thin flexible leather that will form a tube and cover the "work area" of your finger. The tube should slide on your finger, it shouldn't be loose or tight, but it should have a snug fit. Remember, leather is stretchy and it will stretch a little with use. You may need to experiment a little until you find the right fit, use paper for figuring out a pattern, if that's more convenient. Generally the tube will be narrower at your finger tip and a little wider at the second joint. The "work area" should cover most of the finger nail (not counting a grown part of the nail) and come up to your second knuckle, but not over it, it shouldn’t get into the joint when you slightly flex your finger. The leather piece of my thimble is about 1 5/16” long. Allow no more than 1/8” on each of the two sides of the leather piece that will form a side seam of the tube. You don’t need any seam allowance at the open sides of the tube. Punch small holes (no larger than 1/16”) on all four sides, for the side seam punch holes on the seam lines and , this is important, opposite each other. If you don’t have a leather punch, a 1/16” single hole craft/paper punch will do the job.

Using crochet cotton No 10, a steel hook No. 8, and single crochet stitches, form a tube by crocheting through the holes starting at the side seam and taking the hook through 2 layers of leather (the side seam is on the outside of the thimble); then around an opening through one layer. Now make another row of single crochet (into back loops of previous row) if you are at the fingertip end of the thimble. Tighten your stitches to give the opening a finished look and a rounded form, making the thimble narrower in the area of the fingertip; this will also keep the thimble from sliding too far back. At the other end go around with single crochet stitches into leather holes, then do about 5 rows of double crochet, 1st row into back loops. I did the last row skipping every 2nd or 3rd stitch and making chains instead to make this part more open and flexible. Finish with a row of single crochet. I made 3 increases in 3rd row, adding total of 3 double crochet stitches to widen the thimble and allow comfortable flexing of the knuckle. Experiment with yours and try it on several times during the making to ensure a comfortable custom fit. The crochet part, going over and beyond the knuckle, is necessary for the thimble to not slide off your finger while working, so when you flex your finger slightly it holds the thimble in place pretty well.

By the way if you leave the beginning thread a little longer and start the side seam in the direction of the knuckle part and then do the crochet part of the thimble, I think you can use that thread end to finish the point of the thimble, which will save you from dealing with too many ends, if it makes sense.

Don’t close the thimble at the fingertip end. The opening allows a grown fingernail to happily extend beyond the thimble.

Mine has some imperfections, being a product of an experimental idea and quick work. But I don’t care, it’s comfortable, does its job well, and I am happy with it, it’s an essential part of my tool box. You can make it fancier if you want. So try it. It may make all the difference. Anyways you won’t waste a lot of materials if your 1st try will not succeed. Ask your questions if you have any, I’ll be glad to help. Cause if your finger hurts it’s no fun.Larazarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15027006344943309476noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7116409198962270422.post-39048655463258204862010-06-16T21:07:00.003-05:002010-07-01T22:19:41.635-05:00Spiritual qualityCan you give your creations a spiritual quality? I think it's a second half of the meaning of what quality is. You develop your skills to deliver visual, touchable quality that results in a well-made, well-serving, eye-pleasing, maybe even mind-puzzling thing. But there's something more to it. A kind of quality, that is not readily touchable, but obviously perceptible.

Something that is tied to the material quality and yet is more than that. Something that makes a thing more than a thing, something that makes you coming back to it and enjoying it. Something that was put there by the maker in the process of creation, intertwined with fibers, fused with metals, mixed with paints... It not only makes you think about the thing , its maker, and even the experience of acquiring that thing with enjoyment, it - most importantly - makes you feel good. And that is a foolproof way to know if a piece has spiritual quality. Whether it manifests in giving you inspiration, motivation, or just pure enjoyment, it doesn't matter. It just makes you feel good.

So here's a very intriguing question, asking to be answered. Do the makers actually ensoul their creations? I am sure they do, if they choose to. And what do you think about it?

See you in my next post, till then - feel good and don't forget to listen to some nice music at the end of the page.Larazarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15027006344943309476noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7116409198962270422.post-41988463441472058542010-04-08T12:30:00.004-05:002010-06-16T21:09:15.743-05:00A Destructive Element of DesignI experienced it on myself. As soon as you start thinking about making money, the flow of creativity stops. I don't know how to finish a particular design or start a new one anymore. And I don't experience joy. My mind obsessively engages into thinking through ways of getting into the market, putting together an online shop, brought to "perfection", producing items "people will like", and so on and on. I become restless, deprived of energy, strength, and time. I don't feel satisfaction from my design anymore, and look at the items I have to complete, as though it's some kind of chore I have to but don't want to do. Strangely enough, all this thinking and struggling takes up enormous amount of time and energy, I feel definitely sick and cannot even find time for my family and myself. And when I finally realize that I slipped down and need to wake up, the recovery takes still more time.

The strangest thing though is that although the primary reason for all this "money thinking" is desire to grow your business however microscopic it may be at the moment and creating a "perfect" environment for working, connecting, sharing and designing, it doesn't lead you anywhere. In my experience it only leads to stress. It becomes sort of Mirror of Erised from J.K.Rowling's wizarding world, you see yourself prosperous, but don't know how to get there, and so you stay there, staring at the image in the mirror waisting your time and your mind. Apart from being unhealthy mentally and physically, too much of "money thinking" throws you back down the road of your development as an artist-designer, you loose access to indefinite source of creative ideas. And the energy you put into your creations is not exactly the same as you intended in the first place.

After experiencing this for several times, my knowing is that your creativity is your primary and starting point of everything else. You bring into the world that which comes from your deepest place and makes you happy, you bring that to life, that only truth, and the rest comes to you as a natural consequence. Guard your peace, always. And remind yourself often, that whatever you are doing now that feels right, is already bringing you closer to whatever you desire.

And as for something "people will like"..., I always felt deep down that you never have to adjust yourself to some kind of conventional need, or popular demand, or current trend, or whatever. Do what truly comes from your desire to create, offer it to people and the trend or fashion may change.
This beautiful design immediately caught my attention the moment I saw it in a vintage book, published almost a century ago by Mary E. Fitch. I simply fell in love with this crocheted representation of Venetian lace. The seemingly geometrical motifs are surrounded by irregular bars which give the design a flowing look reminiscent of interwoven branches of a tree. But there’s more to it. I like the feel of this elegant heavy cotton lace, which I lined with green velvet.

The fascination was strong enough to keep me going through the whole process of practically rewriting the written pattern, which didn't seem to fit, and completing the bag after many weeks of work, so it would look exactly like the one on the picture from the vintage book. I only changed the bottom of the bag and added crocheted wheels instead of a simple fringe.

And here it is for you to enjoy in color, revived from the last century.
About Venetian Crochet
“The earliest specimens of exquisite needle-made laces date back to the sixteenth century and originated in Italy – those of square designs with geometrical divisions being called Reticella. Later other motifs were introduced, models of leaves, flowers and scrolls and the lace was called Venetian point. ...Another way of representing the forms and figures is successfully accomplished in ... Venetian crochet ... executed in the heavier threads.”
